Yawning A Lot Resource in Q&A
Why do I start yawning (a lot) every time I do resistance workouts? I'm not tired and I don't yawn like that during other activities. I do find it boring, but I doubt that is the reason. Is this common? Is there a medical explanation for this, or am I just weird? Silkin, that is a big fat no..lol, I didn't even think of that! I will definetly pay more attention to that now.

Sniffles replied: "maybe you're not breathing properly when you do resistance training. i read somewhere that we yawn when we're lacking oxygen. just a thought. good luck!"

bunny_fluff14 replied: "I had the same problem w/track. I never really felt "tired". I would be doing our running exercises and outta nowhere I'd start yawning! XD"

Bill Cutting replied: "Maybe you're just so strong that it holds no challenge for you. Or Maybe subconsciously you want people to think that it is really easy for you and you are trying to show off."

silkin_storm replied: "People yawn when they need more oxygen in the blood not just because they are tired. My questions would be are you warming up properly before exercising? And are you breathing proper,ly when you are doing your weight training."

Manic 47 replied: "The claim that yawning is caused by lack of oxygen has not been substantiated scientifically, some claim that yawning is not caused by lack of oxygen, for the reason that yawning allegedly reduces oxygen intake compared to normal respiration. Another speculated reason for yawning is nervousness and is also claimed to help increase the state of alertness of a person - paratroopers were noted yawning right before their first jump. Figure it yourself, maybe it is just part of your body cycle."

entropiii replied: "Yawning is the way your body tries to get extra oxygen. Make sure to stretch enough before your workout and get enough fluids in you. More than likely alot of your workouts are accompanied by alot of sore muscles too. Stretching and flushing your body with extra fluids will help take care of both of those things."

charles replied: "I used to do the same when doing anaerobic exercises (it doesn't happen on aerobic exercies), how long have you been doing that kind of exercise ? My solution was drinking a red bull / coffee or other stimulating drink before workout, 7 minutes before. It will make me more ALERT for the exercise and no yawning. Now my body is used to the exercises I'm doing, so I don't yawn anymore and no more red bull before the workout either. It's kinda a jumpstart, as soon as your body gets used to it, you will not take any stimulating, also note that your body gets resistant to stimulating drugs. Have fun on your workout."

freedom28 replied: "Because your body's not well rested. change your work out timings pretty thang :-) keep that body lookin' great. remember, don't stay lazy...stay lean."

can you die from yawning a lot? i heard that if you yawn a lot then you'll die sooner, is that true?

Paul replied: "I hope not cause I yawn a lot."

Rockmum replied: "what!!!!! i hope not, i yawn alot"

angie replied: "no, Yawning is the brains way of getting its needed amount of oxygen."

Nisaru replied: "no. Technically the yawn expands your lungs to allow oxygen access into the brain for better thought process. I has nothing to do with shortening ones life span. Although, lack of sleep causing yawning might be different depending on the amount of sleep you get. If you get minimal hours for extended periods of time, you body will automatically shut down after awhile, either from exhaustion or lack of electrolights. If the persons sleep patterns continue it will nost certainly lead to a shortened life span, but not from the yawn itself."

Gladys C replied: "is being tired the only reason people yawn? Question: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Answers: No, as others said it has to do with the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in your body. People who are not breathing properly (taking in too much oxygen & not letting enough cd out) can yawn or sigh constantly. Breathing through your nose is the best way to breathe (provided you have nothing wrong with your nose) and it should be like "breathe in 2...3 breathe out 2...3...4" it takes practice if you're used to mouth breathing, your brain will think you arn't getting enough air..but you are. Also yawns are catching...usually somebody saying the word will make nme yawn!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Answers: some believe it can be caused by an imbalance in the air pressure. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some people believe the reason people yawn is to get oxygen to the brain. When you're tired your brain needs oxygen to keep you awake. Sometimes when people exercise they yawn as well, to get more oxygen. It may also be a stretch of the face and therefore is done when you're tired, the same reason you stretch the rest of your body when you're tired."

Shana replied: "Hi If that's the case, I would've been dead a long time ago."

I've been yawning A LOT lately, is that bad? I haven't been tired or anything, I've just been yawning a lot, like every 5 minutes, no joke... I'm about average weight, maybe skinnier, and I'm 15 years old, I dunno if this is normal or not, but it doesn't really seem like it.

Michael P replied: "are you on any medications? a common side effect is yawning. I know anti-depressants can cause yawning."

howcrazy replied: "I think it's fine...growing spurt coming on or something using a little more energy than usual. Make sure you are keeping a healthy diet and getting 8-10 hours of sleep every night. Also, being active helps keep your body regulated."

angel-fire replied: "dehydration you dont have enought oxygen to the brain, u say ur not tired so drink more water so there is more oxygen in ur blood"

Jennii replied: "I get this its REALLLY annoying, Im 15 too. No joke im just sitting in class just yawning every 5 minutes!! HAHA, i mean not yawning Because its a lesson :L"

the bible replied: "its normal it just means your in need of oxygen....... yawning doesnt mean your tired"

calbabie10 replied: "Go to a doctor! Go find out can't hurt."

wildchild_666@ymail.com replied: "no it just means your brain needs oxygen so its kind of a good thing"

May! =) replied: "Oh no! >.< I don't think it is normal....if and only if you re NOT tired than it cannot be good It has something to do with your lungs.... or Brain Function.... If im scaring you....I suggest you should------! Go see a doctor!"

Mike S replied: "it could very well just be a side effect of dehydration. Do you drink alot of soda and/or very little water? If so, BOOM theres your answer"

wowzer9 replied: "Why do we yawn? You say because we are sleepy or tired or bored or see someone else doing it, right? Well, these may or may not have merit, but it is unknown, because there is no evidence to substantiate these beliefs. So what else causes it? The mystery of why we yawn is still not completely solved yet. It is still not known exactly how a yawn occurs either. But the general reason most of us have heard, is pretty much correct. Most professionals believe that yawning is caused by low oxyegen levels in the lungs, in the alveoli of the lungs to be more specific. It is believed that when oxygen levels are low in the lungs, the brain sends us a signal to sigh or yawn, thus causing us to take in more oxygen, which increases oxygen to the alveoli. The alveoli sends the oxyegen directly into the bloodstream. They also rid the body of carbon dioxide when we exhale."

Katy replied: "you know...when I read your question and the word yawn, I yawned. Maybe when you see other people yawn, you yawn, when you think about yawning, you yawn...."

Dance4Lifexx replied: "I have been experiencing the same thing too. Don't worry its just a sign to get more rest even when your not tired at all. You have to let your body get the rest it needs because one day it will just shut down on its self. Believe me my Science teacher makes us learn this stuff. So remember to get your rest :)"

SkyKing replied: "yawning occurs when your body undergoes an oxygen shortage .. when people get sleepy, their respiration slows down (your body slows down when its time to sleep), and yawning is the body's way of increasing oxygen intake without exercise"

makenna replied: "It just means that your Body is wanting More sleep(you may not feel tired... but you really are)"

[K]aho[21] replied: "well yawning is becase the brain is telling us to breathe in more oxygen how much sleep do u get"

crazytacolady replied: "You are probably just tired....but I read somewhere you yawn in in order to regulate your brains temperature. Maybe it's just getting hotter lately where you are and your brain temperature has been too high, and you've been yawning to cool it down a bit. You could try breathing through your nose a bit more, or putting cool washcloth on your forehead. Yawns are kind of like contagious too, so maybe with just one yawn you set off like a yawn chain reaction and keep yawning. Sometimes I go through yawning phases where I'll yawn like 30 times an hour. Anyway, I don't think it's anything serious, unless you are having some other symptoms I wouldn't worry about it too much."

Turtle is not well. He is yawning a lot maybe? I have a turtle bought 6 months back. I had bought 2. 1 of them died last month. Now the other one is not eating since a week. I asked the store person he says it must b alright soon. Looks healthy. But I m worried. He just opens his mouth like yawning and again takes it in. Also does not eat anything. Please help ASAP. I do not want to loose this one.

soupy replied: "9 times out of ten if a turtle isn't eating warm him up. increase the basking and or water temp. For a picky eater try live foods. A gut loaded cricket always does the trick. hope this helps! -katie"

stevebluesnake replied: "maybe you should increase the temperature as this may have something to do with it, maybe some live food will lure him into eating, this may sound horrible but maybe try to force feed him, push food into his mouth"

Agamid Paradise replied: "Yawning is a sign of hunger- your turtle is hungry What have you been feeding him? Have you tried pellets or krill which are made especially for turtles? If you have tried those, you can buy a few feeder fish which will surely attract your turtle if he sees them swimming around! Make sure that the temperature is enough- low temperature may make a turtle stop eating Sorry about your other turtle- good luck with this one!"

Why am I so tired? How can i stop myself yawning and falling asleep? I currently work from home and i get really tired and need an afternoon nap. I need lots of sleep I go to bed at 10pm and get up at 6.30am to go to the gym every morn except weekends. I eat well, exercise and have no idea why i need so much sleep. I am starting an office job soon and am really worried ill fall asleep or yawn lots as i did this in a previous office job and it looks v unprofessional..

LYNN S replied: "A couple of things, are you anemic? If you dont know, Id check with your Doctor. You say you go to the gym, do you overdo it though? Exercise is good, but going mad for 2 hours is not so good every day. Also, eat loads of fruit and veg, avoid stodgy bread, and drink plenty of water."

mysterious replied: "You must be lacking in iron. You need to boost your iron."

brainlady replied: "Do you sleep well, when you sleep? If you do, then the exercise at the gym is probably helping you to sleep as the exercise makes you tired. Sleep is actually good for you when caused by healthy pursuits. You'll soon adapt to your new job- it's all about adapting to a routine which your body will do itself. Make sure you have a low cal snack to hand such as a banana or yogurt, cereal bar or a few raisins etc to keep energy levels up. I found I needed this after the gym as it really takes it out of you. Eating lots of small meals is better for me now. Big meals, bloat me out and make me tired. Get plenty of fresh air. Also try and change your routine. I find I get sleepy for no reason when I have an underlying sense of boredom or depression. Check your emotional state and sort any niggles out. If somebody told you you'd won the lottery and never had to work again - just get on a plane or in a car and go to your favourite restaurant or shop etc- you'd be wide awake (hehe) I know I would. Avoid alcohol- I love it- but it makes me so tired, I have to avoid it if I need my energy. Working from home, I find afternoon naps are tempting- try to avoid by pursuing a hobby or doing some decorating or having a pamper session- nails, condition hair etc. Otherwise- don't worry- if your health is fine- enjoy the nap for the time being."

andy jackson replied: "go to the doc and have a check-up. could be low blood pressure, low blood sugar, vitamin deficiancies, many many thing or maybe your just wearing yourself out going to the gym 5 times a week. seems excessive to me. unless your a pro athlete. best thing to do is just run it through a doctor. also tyr eating nuts and seeds, they are full of energy. some people believe they eat well, but their diets are actually poor and lack enough calories to live on, some people have way to many calories. look at your deit properly and get some advice on it"

tommybear45 replied: "you may have Sleep Apnea???? one of the SXs is EDS, Excessive Daytime Sleepiness"

maxine m replied: "I was also going to suggest sleep Apnea or an underactive thyroid can cause you to be very tired, this can found out in a simple blood test. Hope you get sorted and all the best in your office job"

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "Four good energy boosters are chlorophyll, barley grass, wheat grass and Coenzyme Q10."

How do I stop yawning during exercise? Whenever I exercise, I start yawning a lot. It mainly happens when lifting weights. I don't get physically tired, just mentally. Every time I'm lifting weights, I let out a yawn and feel like taking a nap. It is really annoying and is causing problems. Are there any proteins I am missing?

Psycho replied: "You probably need to get more sleep @ home, or even before you exercise."

zxcv0987 replied: "happens to me too, try exercising a while after taking a multi that helps for me. gingeng or some herbal supplements work good too"

why do I yawn a lot when working out in the gym? seems very strange, but even when I focus on breathing deeply during sets, I still yawn a lot whislt doing weights.

Boeafitness.com replied: "Lack of oxygen to the brain, I do too this too , it's an automatic response from being tired."

Confused replied: "Yawning is the body's way of getting more oxygen to your body. When you yawn your body is lacking some oxygen usually to the brain but you yawn to obtain more. Look on WebMD to see more about it."

B replied: "You yawn due to oxygen depletion. It's good that your trying to breathe deeply during resistance training, but it's your cadiovascular system that's the problem. Your body hasn't developed the ability to transport the additional oxygen need when you work out. Your heart needs to get stronger. Work on your cardio. Run for 20min or so before weights. Also, try to keep your heart rate up between sets. Super set (work different muscle groups at intervals so you don't just stand still) and don't rest for more than 1 minute. If you get cold, you're resting too long, the heart slows and the oxygen supply slows, hence yawning."

Gorilla Mike replied: "yawning happens when you have shortness of breath. It should go away after a few weeks. It is just your body telling you that you need more air. It used to happen to me too."

lv_consultant replied: "yawing occurs when the body is in transition from a state of inactivity to being active or vice versa."

my muscle ache and lot of yawning? last night i started yawning alot and lots i mean big drops of tears came out then at night my head hurt so bad iwoke up at 3 did not go bak to sleepi couldnt even go to school today kuz i was so tired now the pain is starting again but my muscle are hrut more what could it be and should i go back to school tommorow plezz help

Tommy replied: "1. yawning shouldn't have anything to do with it because many people yawn just by thinking about yawning 2. sleep is the best medicine so it might make sense to miss school and sleep in 3. take something for your muscle pain like tylenol, once again rest will be the best thing for you 4. if things don't get better after 2 days or so see a doctor"
