Questions and Answers
fibromyalgia? I have been sick for over a year now. I keep going to the doctor with no answers they keep treating the immediate problem and I am starting to think there is more of a major problem. Possibly Fibromyalgia. I have body ache, pain, disturbed sleep, exhaustion, stiffness when I wake up, tingling in my hands and legs. I know I need to see a Dr. I just want to know more about the disease and if there are any treatments to help it. Thanx Bunches!!!

Blue replied: "If you haven't already, you could try seeing a rheumatologist. They can make the diagnosis. You might also consider some alternative therapies, like acupuncture, chiropractic, massage. Be sure to eat healthy foods, drink water, do stretching (not when you first wake up), get exercise daily."

Jackie replied: "www.alpha-stim.com the alpha-stim has been approved for treatment of fibromyalgia. We use it all the time in the pain management clinic i work for."

Filamentous Philly replied: "IANAD (I am not a doctor) but you need to go see one! They will help you tremendously. Be persistent. Go see a specialist. Get someone to help you! Also, it could be something more curable than fibromyalgia. The symptoms of fibromyalgia are also similar to: * Chronic fatigue syndrome * Depression * Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome * Gulf War syndrome * Influenza * Lead poisoning * Lupus erythematosus (SLE) * Lyme disease * Mercury toxicity * Myofascial pain syndrome * Tendinitis * Thyroid disease * Vitamin B12 deficiency * Vitamin D deficiency * Whiplash-associated disorder Get diagnosed and treated."

sjsugiant replied: "my girlfriend has it and she is turning 20 in exactly 1 week. from what ive seen, studied, and heard is that it is intense pain and weakness. probably caused by (in my opinion) stress. EVERY time she stresses out about something, usually finals, she gets uncontrolled spasms. these are intense spasms that she cannot control what so ever. she has seen EVERY specialist and doctor she can possibly see in the bay area, california. only 1 of those countless docs have deemed it fibromyalgia. do some research online. just type in fibromyalgia and find it online. there are countless sites that describe the condition. Everything that you have described is hers completely. And the only thing that helps is her cocktails of meds and one pain killer (Endocet). Endocet is an extremely protected drug. You have to be registered with the federal government for this medication. i believe it is just short of the strengh of a horse tranquilizer. And this takes an edge off the pain for her. so if you have any questions fruther, email me and we can talk. i can even give you my girlfriends email so you can talk to her. good luck. DONT STRESS. keep a journal of what you do everyday. this may help in pin pointing what you do in your life that may trigger a flare up. record what you did, how you did it, the amount of work you put into the activity, and any stress you went through. then once you pin point it, try to avoid that situation and see if that helps."

Kelli G replied: "My mom actually suffers from FMS. One of the tell tell signs is severe pain at certain pressure points, shoulders, arms, neck, all have these pressure points. From the symptoms you describe, it sounds like you may have it, but it seems like a lot of doctors are falsely diagnosing it. For example I used to work with a girl who was a hairdresser and she was told that she had it because she had stiff shoulders, but... she is a hairdresser, of course she had stiff shoulders. She had no other symptoms to go along with it. Another poster mentioned stress as a factor of flare up which is true. Sometimes the initial occurence happens after a severe injury, in my moms case, an almost fatal car accident 14 years ago. About a year after her wreck she started having unexplained symptoms and was diagnosed with chronic fatigue, depression, and others, but nothing covered all the symptoms until the past few years with the "discovery" of FMS. There are lots of doctors who don't know very much about it. My mom has tried a couple of the medications used to treat it, with no relief. One medication gave her nightmares, which is not good if you already have a hard time getting restful sleep. She has decided not to be a guinea pig anymore and to wait until they have a proven treatment. I feel like you should express your opinion to a doctor and don't stop until you find an answer. It sounds to me like you have reasonable cause to suspect Fibro. Good Luck."

formerly_bob replied: "Not much can be done for fibromyalgia, but you might not have it. Besides fibromyalgia, your symptoms could be caused by something as simple as displaced spinal vertebrae, or an infection like lyme disease. It would be a good idea to systematically eliminate possible causes. An MRI of the spine would identify or rule out several possible spinal problems, including MS. Lyme disease is identified through a blood test. I have degeneration of a couple vertebrae in my neck, and it causes all of the symptoms you are describing, although it seems to come and go. I see a chiropractor to treat this problem and it works great."

Fragrance-Free replied: "LONG --- BUT well worth the reading. Make the connection. I am a nurse with over 25 years experience in this area and I have seen a lot of people with various illnesses caused from chemicals and fragranced products as well as VOCs in their homes, schools and workplace. This problem is growing as more and more chemicals are being introduced and used on a daily basis. We are now seeing more and more children with Asthma, Allergies, Hives, Eczema and many respiratory illnesses. I can not emphasize how important it is to educate yourself about MCS and the harm you may be doing to your health by using chemicals and fragranced products. If you or a loved one suffers from Asthma, Allergies, Autism, chronic headaches, reproductive problems, Migraines, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia, you need to read further and learn about the signs and symptoms of MCS - Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Most doctors will not inform you about this because patients as a whole like to walk out of a doctors office with a pre ion for some magical medicine and they do not want to be told that their expensive new perfume or newly installed carpet may be the culprit. So, the doctor will give you medications and many of these meds either do not work or cause other health problems. Chemicals and fragranced products are often the root of all evil when it comes to your health. Many of the below mentioned items are common triggers to sinus, asthma, itching, headaches, Migraines and allergy problems amongst other health issues. Get rid of them and your lungs will thank you and you will breathe easier. And, it is not only personal body or cleaning products causing havoc on your health.many people become ill after wearing brand new clothing, dry-cleaned clothes, installing new carpet, painting, buying a new mattress or after home renovations because of the Flame Retardants, Benzenes, Formaldehydes, etc. used in these products. So the answer is NO, you are not imagining that 2 weeks after your home, office or classroom got renovated you started to become ill, get dizzy or have headaches. This is happening more and more these days and adults as well as children are becoming sicker and sicker. Unfortunately, too many doctors compound the problem by prescribing chemical medications to try to alleviate the symptoms of an already chemical overloaded body and they rarely tell the patient to eliminate the chemical offenders. How many times have I seen people in the grocery store with Bounce, Glade Plug-Ins and Febreeze in their shopping cart along with a bottle of Benadryl , Migraine Excedrin and a box of Allergy Tablets ? Why dont they make the connection? Here is a Brain Spect Scan Before and after a whiff of perfume: BIG NO-NOs No Bounce or dryer sheets No Febreeze No Glade Plug-ins No scented candles No Fragranced Products on Body, Hair or Clothing No Smoke No Dander No Sprays And remember, it is NOT the smell it is the Chemicals that make up the smell. So, even if something is "Fragrance Free" these products often mask the smell with another chemical ! More and more offices and schools are creating Fragrance Free Zones why do you think this is? Feel free to contact me on this subject."

Dom replied: "Wow. That sounds a lot like when I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1982. If it's fibro, there is presently no "cure," but there are many ways to try to manage it. Each person with FMS is different as to what helps. See my site at for lots of good ideas and 100 Tips for Coping with Fibromyalgia and Insomnia. Sometimes if you can solve the insomnia problem (with sleep meds usually), some of the other problems go away. I really think mine began with a sleep disorder compounded by severe long-term stress."

What Fibromyalgia support groups are located in Plymouth UK, and the South West? Are there any support groups in Plymouth UK, or the South West, still running please? Also, is there anyone living with Fibromyalgia, in the same area, looking for support? I would like to hear from people interested in raising awareness of FMS in the UK.

David K replied: "Yes there are. Google in Fibromyalgia support groups and you will be directed to a web site. I've just done this but for some reason my PC want produce the link in such a way to enable you access direct. Spport groups seems to exist nationwide."

Trooper replied: "call Plymouth and District ME Group It provides information and support for people with ME/CFS, their family and friends. Contact: 44 Skylark Rise, Woolwell, Plymouth PL6 7SN E-mail: Tel: 01752 214856."

Is there a corelation between fibromyalgia and the consuming of carbonated soft drinks? If I've got fibromyalgia (I think I do) I suspect my diet has something to do with it (prehaps other things too). If I do have fibromyalgia, carbonated soft drinks heads my list as a possible contributor to it and/or with cafeine as a runner up and/or equal to it? Is there a corelation with either or both if they are taken together in a can or bottle of soda pop? Thank you for any helpful input because it is getting painful. Ed

MeInThisWorld replied: "Foods/driks can contibute to it for soem people- but they do not cause it- Diet will not cure ior releive symptomst-but may help your body compensate FMS has been believed to be a disorder of teh central nervous system for about 10 yeasr now--and i would think caffeine affects the CNS I would think it is less likely to be the carbonation"

Fibromyalgia- what are others way to get relief from the pain? I've had Fibromyalgia for 17 years now. I've been off and on Medicine for it. I was just wondering if anyone who has it , had any other methods of pain relief besides medication. Thanks!

p_l_gray replied: "The first step is to realize that the condition doesn't exist. To answer mcdannell's question, I received my undergrad degree from the University of California and my MD from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. I did my residency in orthopaedics and sports medicine at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center. Do some research. More than 80% of specialty trained physicians understand the fibromaylgia is not a true diagnosis, but a trash can diagnosis that is used by primary care to lump all difficult pain patients. Once you realize that fibromyalgia doesn't exist then you can find the true cause of the pain and provide appropriate management. Now that I've list my bona fides.... how about you? Where did you get your medical degree? That's what I thought."

justbeingher replied: "Go on a detox regimen and colon cleanse. Drink lots of water. get massage weekly."

Rahul A replied: "see a physical therapist. he/she can help you more than u can imagine, but just give the therapy a few patient weeks to show effect."

mcdannells replied: "I have RA and know what pain is ....yuk! Anyhoo Pain killers are just a way of life, or pain management. I will add a link below to our pain management commission, it might come in handy to you. Only thing so far I have found to relieve some of the pain other then pain killers I do not react good to (you no the throwing up, knocks you out so you sleep all the time on and on) is cannabis. Legal in our state. Doesn't knock me out,no throwing up, I have seizures as well and some of the pain killers I had been on put me into one, known of these with this. It does not do anything for my body attacking itself, but have herd the medication out there that does slow this down has other health risks....I also take inflammatorys. Messages feel real good!! So does the hot tub (these days it is a hot bath tub lol). What ones body reacts too others do not. Good luck finding relief and go read up on pain management, the site may have some information to help you out? P.S. I went and looked up this fibromyalgia and it is recognized as a condition contrary to the first poster up there (so if this person is a real doctor where did he get his medical degree?). This seams to be a touchy issue on this board? Link below... How can one say the pain one feels is not "real" pain?? I guess I just do not understand some people....."

Dnarose replied: "Many times the fibro is a symptom of being hypothyroid. If this is the case a T4/T3 medication like Armour can help to relieve the muscle and joint aches. To diagnose thyroid, you want a morning only TSH, Free T4,and Free T3. Many times doctors only do a TSH and sometimes the Free T4 and Free T3 can catch what a TSH misses."

crimsonshedemon replied: "I have FMS along w/systemic lupus, hypothryoid, stenosis, etc, etc. I take many different medications- pain meds, muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatories, sleep meds, anti-depressant, etc. Exercise is also an important part. While it hurts to get started, it ends up helping.... Those who say it doesn't exist are the type who say "it's all in your head" "it must be your period" and crap like that. We've all had to deal w/that. Try to find a doctor who understanding and understands the disorder. Make sure all other problems have been ruled out... especially if you were dx'd 17 yrs ago. There are a lot of new meds that are helping a lot of people. Chronic pain has some nasty long term side effects and no doctor should ever dismiss your pain. Take care Nicole"

nunciata22 replied: "The best relief I have found aside from certain medications...excercise and massages. I have also found a wonderful new thing called floating. Its a "capsule" that has tons of salt in it and about 10 inches of water...and you float. Like you would in the Dead Sea. I came out of the floating session feeling like a new person, I kid you not!"

Reva P replied: "First and foremost, fibromyalgia IS a real illness. There is at least one specific test that is used as part of making a differential diagnosis. I'm shocked that the first respondant here doesn't want to understand and accept this for a fact. Further, although it wouldn't be used simply because of it's cost, there are specific tests that can be done during a functional MRI that shows the differences in pain responses between an FM patient and a non-FM patient. Have you ever seen a chiropractor for an evaluation and help? It is possible to get some help from a DC, but it's not for everyone. I have other types of arthritis, in addition to FM, so it may be that I would get more relief from a chiro than does someone else. But it's something to try. Have you been referred to a pain clinic? This would be a way for you to get a more updated combination of meds and to help to find other specific management methods that will also be of assistance to you. And when did you last see a rheumatologist? Yes, FM exists, but there are a few other types of arthritis that can mimic some of the effects of FM and that are more easily dealt with. This doesn't mean that you don't have FM or that you're not in pain, it's just a way of checking that there isn't anything else going on. Having any one chronic illness does not make you immune from any other type of medical problem, inlcuding other chronic illnesses Make certain that you stretch and exercise (to tolerance) every day. Doing all of this in heated pool, as a part of an arthritis aquafit program, can do wonders to help relieve some of the pain, and to increase flexibility. It's also a way to get out on a regular basis, and that helps greatly, too."

What are good remedies for Fibromyalgia? I have fibromyalgia and possible rheumatoid arthritis. What are some good treatments/remedies that you or someone you know has found to be helpful?

jeannendon replied: "I take vicodin daily. but I also started taking Goji Juice, from the health food store, and its lessen my pain some already in a week. Ive heard Noni and Goji juice 4 oz. a day. Really the only thing that had worked was the vicodin and I would go crazy without it. so Im hoping the goji juice will help me in the long run , ive read testimonials that it will..good luck."

Jen replied: "i found that certain foods cause me to flare up... so i naturally cut those out of my diet. lots of water, stretches... i havent gotten into yoga, but i do stretch every night and it is very helpful. and im sure you know. sleep makes or breaks your day. melatonin really helped me. its all natural you can find it at any supermarket. fibromyalgia sucks... im sorry you are going through it... but im right there with you... along with a few other things."

Kimber replied: "I would love to give you some good advice but I haven't had any luck. I have had this for about 9 yrs and have tried massage P.T. and accupuncture and steroid injections. I didn't give aquatics a good enough shot so I might try it again, if ya have any suggestions let me know."

prism1964 replied: "Start exercising....start slow and increase as you can. I've found that to be one of the best things I could do. I walk 2 miles a day...working up to 3. Stretching is great but do it slowly. Also, I take Prozac for the depression. I try to get the sleep I need....I take Ativan for that. Good luck!"

Pierre replied: "Fibromyalgia is a rheumatic disease. If you were misdiagnosed, you could suffer from seronegative rheumatoid arthritis, just like myself. I have had seronegative rheumatoid arthritis for 27 years. The telling signs of seronegative rheumatoid arthritis are the following: - Joint pain in the feet (or cracking ankles) in the early 20's or late teens; - Fatigue; - Blood test showing a negative or low level of Rheumatoid factor; - Joint deformities of the fingers, over time, a specific sign of rheumatoid arthritis; - Consecutive X-Rays showing bone erosion, a consequence of rheumatoid arthritis; - Generalized arthritis, involving the whole body; - Elevated levels of C-Reactive protein and Sedimentation rate, as evidenced in blood tests. NSAIDs like Voltaren, COX-2 inhibitors like Celebrex, acetaminophen like Tylenol, and codeine are all used to control inflammation and relieve the pain of arthritis. A low dosage of anti-depressants, 25 mg or 50 mg at bedtime, can also be used to relax muscles and avoid the pain of fibromyalgia. Regular exercise like walking, biking and swimming is also helpful for most patients. Make sure that you are not overweight as carrying too much weight can only increase the pain of arthritis in the supporting joints of the hips, knees, ankles and feet. You should consult an Orthopaedist who will order blood tests, joint scans and X-Rays to better diagnose the type of arthritis from which you suffer. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (http://www.aaos.org) maintains a public online directory where you can find the address and phone number of orthopaedists who belong to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Orthopaedists are listed by geographic and family name, inside the USA and in most countries. The membership directory of the AAOS is located at: Lyme disease could be a possibility. Ask your doctor to test you for the bacteria causing Lyme disease. Are there any other cases of arthritis or rheumatic diseases among your relatives? Chronic forms of arthritis are usually prevalent in families where a defective gene is passed on by parents to their children. There are a few hundred types of arthritis and rheumatic diseases. The good news is that science is progressing rapidly in its understanding of rheumatic diseases. Antibiotics are now used to achieve full remissions for at least 40%, if not 65% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Fibromyalgia is even easier to treat. Are there any natural remedies for Fibromyalgia that really work? I have Fibromyalgia and have been on a roller coaster ride of pre ion drugs. I'm sick of it. It's been a couple years, and I'm still not feeling any better. I still hurt like H**L, but I really am sick of being treated like a guinea pig!!! I'm ready to try some natural remedies. I take Elavil for the psychological aspects of the disorder. I don't want to be one of those people who says, "oh I feel fine" and then quits the meds, but I don't want to be reliant on any drugs.

Kiki replied: "Have you tried high doses of B vitamins? You may still need to be prescribed them, if you need a REALLY high dose... but they're just vitamins, and there's nothing habit-forming about them."

MeInThisWorld replied: "some people whoa re diagnosed with FMS are cured with b12 shots (may have been misdiagnosed) 5HTP may work-it is teh natural form of SSRIs-but you can't combine them- musculoskeltal drugs don't work. it has been believed taht FMS is neuro (central nervosu system) in nature for about 10 years the drugs taht have shown promise for peopel taht truly have FMS are Lyrica and Tramadol (SSRI for pain)"

Clark Kent replied: "You would have to live under a rock to have not noticed the resurgence of interest in natural health alternatives. People are using home remedies of the past and considering the methods of other cultures for everything from beauty products to treating serious illness with varying degrees of success. When it comes to a chronic and life changing disease like fibromyalgia, it would never be a good idea to rely solely on holistic medicine to help, but there are definitely natural fibromyalgia treatments that can improve the quality of your life and symptoms where traditional medicine just cant. What is the best shoe for fibromyalgia sufferers? I have fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis and my legs and feet burn from pain. I have tried many different shoes and they work for awhile and then stop. I would like some input from others on the most cushioned shoes both casual, sport and dress.

tommybear45 replied: "are you sure you don't have Gout too?? i like New Balance (for wider feet) very comfortable, buy the Best"

fuzzykitty replied: "A shoe with a cushioned sole . with plenty of toe room. And you don't want a totally flat sole, nor do you want one that puts all your weight on the front part of your foot."

How do you handle someone who has fibromyalgia and addicted to pills? I have no way of 100 % proving that she has overdosed in the past but I know she has. She was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1993 and its gone down hill from there. I feel that she is unstable and will take drastic measures. Is there a way to have her committed for her own good?

gaban24 replied: "My wife was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and she is in constant pain. I don't know if eventually she'll need stronger doses of the medicines she takes, but we have to be understanding, it's a very painful illness and it takes a lot of patience and empathy from all of us involved. It would be really good if she / you could find a support group. Good luck."

maryann c replied: "Unfortuantley you cannot have anyone commited against their will, believe me in the early 80s my husband was violent alcoholic and me and his family tried everyplace to have him commited, those days are over, the only thing you can do is try to talk to her and see if you can convince her to go into therapy. Where is she getting all the pills? If she does get a therapist maybe you can talk to the therapist and let her know about this problem, cause this might be something she wont tell the therapist goodluck"

What is the percentage of a transplant recipient getting fibromyalgia? I know my immune system is compromised & fibromyalgia is a auto-immune disorder.

MeInThisWorld replied: "Fibromyalgia is not an autoimmune disorder It is believed to be a disorder of teh central nervous system for about 10 years. Previously it was believed to be amusculoskeletal condition. there was a theory taht it coudl bne autoimmune-but has been mostly discounted. there is a differnece between autoimmune and immune dusfunction. autoimmune is when the immune system attacks it's own body immune dysfunction is when the immune system under or over reacts to foreign materials. there is some immune dysfunction in Fibromyalgia. i could see your concern that Fibromyalgia may cause the immune system to react even more strongly to a transplanted organ and increase the risk of rejection. I don't know if this has ever been looked at percentage wise- would the organ sharing network have info on things such as this?"

Mary N replied: "There are many, many autoimmune disorders; and, although your immune system may be compromised due to transplant, what makes you think you have or may get fibromyalgia? To my knowledge, there has been no systematic inquiry into a relationship between the transplant experience (of what particular organ? at what age? gender?) and the onset of fibromyalgia. In fact, many practitioners label differing symptoms with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia; this is often nothing more than a "garbage can" diagnosis for frustrated physicians to get annoying patients out of their waiting rooms."
